Summary
Ted Lasso & Coach Beard travel to the United Kingdom to take over as coaches of AFC Richmond. Ted meets the new owner, Rebecca, the rowdy press, and the team as he steps into a whole new, unfamilary environment. Ted isn't in Kansas anymore...how will "Ronald F*ing McDonald" handle the pressure?
Favorite Moments
When Ted meets the "Kit Man," Nate, for the first time, he asks him what his name is. "Nobody asks me what my name is," Nate tells Ted, a foreshadowing of Nate's deep insecurities. Later, Ted provides Nate with another double whammy - a compliment and he remembered his name. "You continue to impress me, Nate" Ted says.
The surprise Press Conference: Rebecca conveniently forgets to give Ted the head's up about a room full of reporters waiting to pounce on the American who's never coached "soccer," or football before. Instead of running, Ted proceeds and provides a master class in deflection and humility.
In less than 10 minutes after meeting his boss, Ted demonstrates empathy when he asks Rebecca "How you holding up?" referring to her recent divorce from former owner Rupert and the related scandals.
Favorite Quotes
"I do love a locker room, it smells like potential," Ted tells Coach Beard as they enter the club locker room for the first time.
"If you think he's mad now, wait until we win him over," Ted tells Coach Beard, referring to Captain Roy Kent.
"Do you believe in ghosts, Ted?" Rebecca asks Ted. "I do, but more importantly I think they need to believe in themselves."
"Taking on challenges is a lot like riding a horse, if you are comfortable doing it, you're probably doing it wrong," -- Ted Lasso
Lasso Lessons
Try to always show compassion and humility in the face of hostility (Ted in the Press Conference)
Take time to truly get to know someone, no matter their role on the team. You never know what it's going to mean to them (Ted asking Nate what his name is and continuing to engage with him, which is obviously something Nate is not accustomed to).
Lead with Intention: It was clear from the first episode that Ted had a plan around Roy Kent. Not only was he Captain, which brings a different level of respect and authority in the locker room, but Ted knew that Roy's personality was such that if he could sway him to believe in "the Lasso Way" it would have massive impact on his success with the rest of the team.
